Pro sports players are having a rough time with vaccine mandates. Particularly in places like the Bay Area, and the state of New York. Although leagues like the NBA, and the NHL don’t have a vaccine mandate in place players do need to be vaccinated in these areas to be able to access the arenas, and therefore play in games. Evander Kane, an NHL player for the San Jose Sharks, allegedly thought up a way to be able to play without getting the shot. Just go get yourself a fake vaccine card!

At this point, we are not in a position to confirm or deny that in fact, Kane presented a fake vaccination card in order to bypass the COVID protocols set in place by the city. However, the rumor that that's exactly what he did has been spreading like wildfire amongst NHL circles. Sportsnet was the first outlet to report that something fishy was going on regarding Kane and his vaccination status. With Front Office sports being the first outlet to run the story that the issue was actually over a potential fake vaccine card.

The NHL does not have an official rule that states you can’t fake your vaccine card. However, the FBI does! The punishment that Kane would be facing with the FBI would be much more serious than just not being paid a few games in the NHL. The law states that,

“Buying, selling, or using a counterfeit COVID-19 vaccination card is a crime, violators face a fine and up to five years in prison.”

Even if you’re not going to be playing pro sports any time soon, this seems like useful information. Particularly, for the unvaccinated crowd.

Why Take The Risk?

We’re not going to get into the argument of whether or not this man should’ve just gotten vaccinated and be done with it. Why take the risk of creating a fake card, though? That answer is actually pretty simple. As we’ve mentioned certain areas have a vaccine mandate in place. One of those areas is the Bay Area where Kane happens to work as a player for the San Jose Sharks. Teams are allowed to deduct payment from their players for every practice and game that they miss due to their vaccination status. Kane essentially wanted the best of both worlds like Hannah Montana. Choosing not to get vaccinated, but keeping all of the cash.

He’s Had His Issues In The Past

There’s a whole other debate to be had on just how fake the vaccination card looked to get people suspicious about its validity. The problem for Kane is that he’d been involved in a couple of sketchy dealings in the past. He got himself into legal trouble over gambling issues. He declared for bankruptcy due to the bills that he had to pay in this case. That’s potentially why he wasn’t about to give money back to the league. The fact that he has a bit of a checkered past is potentially the reason why league authorities looked deeper into his case than they would have with other players.
