Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged countries, bringing increasing death rates in its wake and sending the globe into a compulsory lockdown.
Amid all the grim and grief caused by the pandemic, some celebrities still found time to infuse happiness into their lives. These stars forged on by starting a family or expanding them.
However, one unique trend fans noticed was most pregnant celebrities kept their baby bumps under wraps. Occasionally, they found out about the preggy news after they gave birth.
Whether this was to prevent harassment from paparazzi or because of the lockdown, no one really knows.
Well, with 2021 far gone, it is raining babies here and there in the entertainment industry. Here are four female A-listers who got pregnant in 2020 and kept it a secret from the media.
Alicia Vikander is one actress who loves flying under the radar. The Golden Globe Award winner secretly welcomed her first child with her husband Fassbender, earlier this year after taking in during the pandemic.
In an interview with a news outlet, she gave a tidbit on how motherhood is a world of new experiences for her.
“I now have a whole new understanding of life in general, “she said. “That’s pretty beautiful, and obviously will give a lot to any of my work in the future.”
The actress who portrayed Lara Croft in the action reboot film “Tomb Raider,” opened up about her baby while promoting her new movie, “Blue Bayou.” In the film, she played the part of a pregnant mother alongside actor Justin Chon.
When asked for more details of her postpartum experience, Vikander returned to her shell of privacy and only disclosed that she is taking it one step at a time.
“No, I think I’ll wait with that one,” the Swedish star said. “I’m enjoying finding it out in the moment right now, more than anything.”
Before this, the singer hid her baby bump for a long time with elaborate antics and was glad she did not have to do it any longer.
“Omg so glad I don’t have to suck it in anymore,” she wrote, before adding, “or carry around a big purse lol,” the “Roar” singer tweeted.
The Popstar first showed off her baby bump in her music video for “Never Worn White,” as she cradled her bulging stomach while she was styled in an exquisite white dress.
“It’s probably the longest secret I’ve ever had to keep. I thought I would tell you guys in the best way through a piece of music,” Perry told fans in an Instagram Live after the video release.
“I had to reveal it at some point. It’s getting pretty obvious.”
Nicki Minaj’s pregnancy was more like an open secret. She first hinted at it via Twitter early last year.
“Lmao. No throwing up. But nausea and peeing nonstop. Omg, what do u think this means guys???? Lmaooooooooooo,” she tweeted.
Nevertheless, it took a while for the Grammy nominee to show off her bump to the public. She broke the silence when she debuted her preggy look on her Instagram page.
“#Preggers,” the rapper captioned a picture of her bump. “Love. Marriage. Baby carriage. Overflowing with excitement & gratitude. Thank you all for the well wishes.”
For Minaj, getting pregnant fulfilled a plan in her life’s bucket list. She told Complex in 2014 about her wishes for her life beyond her career.
“If I’m done with my fifth album and I don’t have a child by then no matter how much money I have, I would be disappointed, as a woman, because I feel like I was put here to be a mother,” the rapper said.
“I definitely will be married before I have my baby. I want to make sure I do it in that order. I’ve always felt like that since I was young; my mother always put that in my head.”
Minaj, 37, and husband Kenneth Petty, 42 welcomed their baby on September 30, 2020.
Nobody thought that Scarlett Johansson was with child until her noticeable absence at several promotional events, ahead of her solo superhero movie “Black Widow.”
The pregnancy rumors grew in scale when she later appeared in several zoom interviews as her absence became more pronounced.
She allegedly made sure that the camera showed her only from the shoulders up during the interviews. These concealed other parts of her body that might have confirmed the rumors.
Johansson’s husband, comedian Colin Jost, later put the speculations to rest when he divulged some news about the baby in a stand-up show in Connecticut, mid-August. “We’re having a baby. It’s exciting,” he told the audience, as per eyewitness reports.
Days later, the couple welcomed their son amid surprise from fans. A source close to the couple confirmed the story and disclosed that the child was named Cosmo.
