It’s an exciting time to be a female rapper, with the future of female entertainers becoming brighter than ever. Among the current crop of powerhouses were veteran Nicki Minaj, reality-star-turned-artist Cardi B, Miami duo City Girls, rage queen Rico Nasty, rapper and songstress Lizzo, the multitalented Kodie Shane, and more.
However, few experienced the type of fame rising star, Megan Thee Stallion was experiencing right now.
Born Megan Pete in February 1995, Stallion was born for stardom. At an early age, she was heavily influenced by Pimp C and Notorious B.I.G., and while there weren’t a lot of Houston women holding it down in music at the time, she knew that she could shake things up and leave her imprint on the city.
With sexy anthems like “Big Ole Freak” and critically acclaimed mixtapes like “Fever,” the Houston-born rapper established herself as one of the most exciting new artists in the rap industry. Her explosive skills behind the mic, unapologetic sexual appeal and electric personality attracted a rapidly growing fanbase that she calls “the Hotties.”
Stallion has become the “it’’ girl of the music world and has continued to pave the way for future female rappers to tackle the once male-dominated genre.
Stallion Began To Write Her Raps At 16
Having watched her mother, Holly Thomas, spit rhymes under the name Holly-Wood while she tagged along on trips to the studio, Stallion resolved to be like her one day. She characterized her mom’s music as “hardcore gangster.” She said, “When I started rapping, and cussing and s–t, my mom was like, ‘I don’t know where you get it from.’ But she was a potty-mouth, worse than me.’’
At the age of 16, she began to write her raps. They were reportedly so explicit that they had Thomas clutching her pearls.
However, after she saw how serious her daughter was about music, the former rapper started to manage Stallion. This marked the beginning of a promising career.
Her mom managed her career until she passed away on March 22, 2019, after suffering from a cancerous brain tumor. “The best mom in the whole world,” Stallion wrote in a tribute on Instagram following her mother’s death. “The strongest woman on the planet. I can’t even put complete sentences together, rn. RIP mama.”
The rapper said her dad, Joe Pete, was a “full-time hustler” who was imprisoned for the first eight years of her life and died when she was 15.
She Once Entered A Rap Battle To Impress Her Crush
When Stallion first started off, she proved herself through freestyle rap battles. This was to show that she could hang on to the mic when the time came. In one of these rap battles, however, she didn’t rap to prove her talent, rather, she rapped to impress a college crush.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the rapper opened up about how she won her first rap battle to gain the attention of a longtime crush of hers.
“It was like me and my best friend, and we went to this little party,” Stallion said. “It was like all the basketball players were in there rapping, and nobody knew I could rap. The guy that I liked, he was going real hard, and I was like he got to know I could rap.”
Determined to prove herself to the person she admired, she jumped into the rap battle to earn his attention. Although Stallion didn’t confirm whether or not she won her crush’s affection, she confirmed that she won the competition.
“So, I just jumped in, and all the guys were like, ‘We don’t even want to rap no more.’ So, I could say I won that rap battle.”
Backstory Of Her Stage Name
Friends have referred to the rapper as a “Stallion” since she was 15 years old. Uncertain of what the term meant initially, she mentioned that she was offended and turned to her uncle for clarity.
Through her uncle, she found out that a Stallion was a compliment given to tall and curvy women in the South.
“Since I was younger, I’ve always had the same body,” she told Houstonia. “Older guys would always be like, ‘Oh you a stallion.’ I finally had to ask, like, is that a good thing? Everybody pretty much took it and ran with it, and then I put it as my main name on Twitter. Ever since then everybody’s just been calling me Stallion,” the rapper explained in an interview.
Is Stallion Currently In A Relationship?
The “Body” hitmaker confirmed that she’s dating fellow rapper Pardison Fontaine during a recent Instagram Live session. Stallion opened up about their relationship as she defended Fontaine from negative comments she saw online.
“I don’t be liking some of the stuff on the internet,” she said during the live stream, which was captured in a video by The Shade Room.
