You never want to end up on Denzel Washington’s bad side. Ellen Pompeo found that out the hard way. At least that’s what she recently told her Co-star Patrick Dempsey in the newest edition of her Tell Me with Ellen Pompeo podcast.
The two were reminiscing about their time together on the show. When Ellen brought up an episode from way back in 2016 that Washington was brought in to direct. Tensions ran high on the Grey’s set. Made worse by the fact that neither Washington nor Pompeo had any intentions of backing down from the fight!

How The Incident Took Place
From the way that Pompeo tells it, it was actually she who was in the wrong in the first place. She said that during filming there was an actor, whom she did not name, who just wasn’t putting in the right type of work that Denzel was looking for. Washington went over to said actor, and politely described the type of effort he was looking for in that particular scene. Ellen recalls her reaction to that incident saying,
“He made this choice to speak very softly — and I was pissed that I had to sit there and listen to this apology,”
Pompeo Decided To Take Directing Into Her Own Hands
By this point, Pomepo admits that she was pretty pissed. She decided to take matters into her own hands and take over as the director of the scene with some unwarranted improv. Pomepeo recalls that she started yelling at the actor that was underperforming. Ultimately that wasn’t something that Denzel was a fan of. Ellen though recalls yelling at the actor saying,
“Again, we love actors who make choices. And I yelled at him, I was like, ‘Look at me! When you apologize, look at me!’ And that wasn’t in the dialogue.”
Denzel Standing His Ground
This is the point in the story where essentially all hell breaks loose. With Denzel stepping up for the still unnamed actor who got a chewing from Ellen. She recalled the whole scene saying that Denzel went ham on her ass. While then detailing,
“He was like, ‘I’m the director! Don’t you tell him what to do!’ I was like, ‘Listen, motherf–ker, this is my show! This is my set! Who are you telling? You barely even know where the bathroom is!’”
No Love Lost Between The Two
Eventually, tempers cooled off and Denzel was able to finish directing the show. Pompeo says that she doesn’t have any type of beef or bitterness with Washington over the incident. In fact, going as far as to say that she respects that work that he’s done as a director and actor. After the incident though she wanted to make sure that Denzel did not go unpunished for yelling at her. So she actually went ahead and told on him to his wife. Who, apparently later had some words for the star over his incident with Ellen Pompeo. Pompeo sure was the star of the show, but Denzel stands his ground!
