Some Taylor Swift fans think that Damon Albarn’s apology looks a little less like an apology and more like a defense.

Yesterday, Albarn criticized the “I Bet You Think About Me” singer in a new interview with The Los Angeles Times while promoting his new album “The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows.”

When it was suggested that Swift was a good example of an “excellent songwriter,” Albarn was quick to disagree.

“That doesn’t count,” he said. “I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different to writing.”

“I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes,” he continued. “Doesn’t mean that the outcome can’t be really great.”

Taylor Swift Claps Back On Twitter: ‘Your Hot Take Is Completely False’

Taylor saw the article and retweeted it to her own Twitter page, reminding Albarn and all of her critics that she writes all of her own songs.

“@DamonAlbarn I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this,” she tweeted. “I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really f—ed up to try and discredit my writing. WOW.”

She followed it up by writing, “PS I wrote this tweet all by myself in case you were wondering.”

Even producer Jack Antonoff, who helped Swift create “folklore” and “evermore” went off on Albarn on Twitter. “i’ve never met damon albarn and he’s never been to my studio but apparently he knows more than the rest of us about all those songs taylor writes and brings in. herb,” he tweeted.

He later added, “if you were there … cool … go off. If not … maybe … shut the f--- up?”

Damon Albarn Says His Comments Were ‘Reduced To Clickbait’?

Shortly after Swift started trending, Albarn quickly hopped into the comments to apologize, although some fans aren't ready to forgive him so easily.

“I totally agree with you,” Albarn wrote. “i had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait. I apologise unreservedly and unconditionally. The last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting. I hope you understand. – Damon.”

Although he said that he apologized, many fans just did not see it and accused him of gaslighting by using his own interview against him.

Jedward commented on his apology, saying, “Fake AF you said what you said! You are degrading Hope you understand – Jedward.”

“Weird that you say you apologize in this tweet yet there remains no statement of ‘I’m sorry,’” another fan wrote. “You are also blame shifting by stating it was ‘reduced to clickbait.’ The statement about Taylor was a direct quote from YOU. This is an embarrassing response on your part. Shame on you.”

Actress Terrina Chrishell Strause commented saying, “I just read the full quote in context. Nope, that’s all on you to own buddy. Context did NOT help. A moody musician that works to discredit a wildly more successful artist because they deem their music less than. Original.”

“What part of this was reduced to clickbait?” asked comedian Alex Goldschmidt. “You said her songwriter doesn’t count as songwriting and then compared her to another female artist with a completely different style. Don’t gaslight and throw someone else under the bus because you never thought she’d call you out.”
